John DOUGHERTY

John Dougherty (1791-1860)

John Dougherty was born 1791 @ Nelson County KY.


His parents were Michael Dougherty (1769-1830) & Jane Stephenson/Dougherty (1772-1846). 


At age 17 (1809) he became an explorer and trapper. He moved to St. Louis & joined the Missouri Fur Company, which was associated with the Lewis & Clark expedition whose goal was to explore the newly acquired western frontier of the U.S. after the Louisiana Purchase. 


Working for the Bureau of Indian Affairs (1820-1837) he was the first Indian agent in Kansas. As a government interpreter, he spoke English, French & several Indian dialects. He was bestowed the title of "Major" in honor of his service.


In 1823 he married Mary Hertzog (1799-1873) at St. Louis MO. She was the daughter of a prominent family in Philadelphia PA.


Together they had several children:


- Ann Elizabeth Dougherty (1824-1909)
- Lewis Bissell Dougherty (1828-1916)
- O'Fallon Dougherty (1832-1915)
- John Kerr Dougherty (1835-1864)


Two sons died as babies = Charles (1825) & Henry (1827)


1837 -- moved to (Clay) MO

1839 -- left government employment

1840 -- elected to Missouri State Legislature

1840 -- census @ (Clay) MO included 5 whites + 12 slaves

1843-1854 -- purchased thousands of acres of land

1855 -- established Multnomah Plantation @ Gallatin (Clay) MO

John Dougherty was opposed to the abolition of slavery but not in favor of Civil War secession. Two of his sons served in the Confederate army. John Kerr Dougherty was killed in battle. Lewis Bissell Dougherty was a prisoner of war for 4 years. Daughter Ann married a Union officer.

When John Dougherty died, Multnomah Plantation & the people he enslaved were inherited by his wife & children.

Slave Schedules

1850 Slave Schedule @ Gallatin (Clay) MO -- John DOUGHERTY owned 24 people. His brother Jabez DOUGHERTY owned 3 people.

1860 Slave Schedule @ Gallatin (Clay) MO -- John DOUGHERTY owned 56 people. His son Lewis Bissell DOUGHERTY owned 5 people.

1860 Slave Schedule @ Gallatin (Clay) MO -- John Kerr DOUGHERTY (son of Major John DOUGHERTY) owned 8 people.
